I’ve been going through some crazy imposter syndrome the last few days, among other anxiety.

I am nearing completion of my art book, and I’m also close to finding out if I’m to be accepted as an art vendor at a convention this year. I’ve never sold my art at a convention before, so I’m nervous.

When I look at other vendors and I see all the cute or interesting things they make, I feel very inadequate. How does my own stuff compare? Do I even deserve a spot as a vendor? I’d be taking up a space that someone more talented than me could be using - or at least someone with something less niche. I feel like people would prefer something more wholesome or relatable than someone who draws dark, kinky things.

I recognize that there are people who love what I do, including friends and family, and I’m forever grateful to them. But my inner feelings are in conflict.

If I’m approved, I suppose I will have to trust the judgement of those who want me there. I’ll probably feel better in some ways, though more nervous in others. If I’m not approved, I will feel less pressure, but I’ll feel as though my thoughts of inadequacy have been verified.

The deadline for submissions is January 31st. If you have anything outstanding that you'd like to submit, please submit it to me before that deadline. Submissions don't have to be perfect or fully coloured, even sketches are fine.

If you'd like to submit something:

-The image must contain at least one of my characters within the book. The best options are my cat girl and mascot Rjain, my raccoon character Acid, my bat character Sable, or my wolf character Mercury. All of these characters can be found in my Newgrounds gallery.

-The image must be of a sexual/erotic nature. It doesn't need to be hardcore, it could simply be the character nude and in a suggestive pose.

-The image cannot contain gore/mutilation. Light scratch marks or very minor bleeding is okay, but absolutely no guro.

-The image cannot depict characters who appear to be under the age of 18. This includes lalafells from Final Fantasy XIV. No chibis or cutesy characters that might appear to be underaged to some people.

I have a question regarding unscouted artists.

Every now and then I like to browse the art portal for talented artists who may not have been scouted yet, and I frequently see many very good artists that show up as unscouted. But I can't scout them? And they often have thousands of followers?

Why are they showing up in unscouted? Their work is clearly well above the quality needed for it. Maybe they were scouted previously and lost it somehow?

It's just a little annoying. It makes it harder to find new talent because I'll just keep coming across these individuals over and over again when their work should already be in the art portal to begin with.

Before I start what I wanted to talk about I just wanted to post a reminder about art book submissions. I'm nearing the halfway point and would like all submissions submitted soonish. Please scroll to the bottom of this journal to read more about that and the rules.

I wanted to quickly talk about art comments I've received. As of this post, I don't receive many comments across my art submissions. I suppose in a sense I should count myself lucky because I've managed to avoid the typical torrent of "cool" or "nice" or "hot", etc. That's fine. I wanted to acknowledge those, however, that do reach out and go out of their way to let me know how much they enjoy what I do.

Every now and then I will get someone who will send me a DM either on Patreon, Twitter, Discord, here, or even inside Final Fantasy XIV (the MMO I often play and draw content of). Usually said DMs consist of things like "I just wanted to say I really enjoy your art!" or "Just wanted to thank you for your art and I hope to see more!"

You people are heroes to me. Thanks for doing that. You may not understand the complete isolation a lot of us artists have when it comes to the impact of what we do. Not only do I feel this constantly, but I've seen a lot of other artists echo it recently. We will post something, it may garner a lot of attention like views/awards, but although we see "Number Go Up" we don't really feel anything past that. "Number Go Up" alone rarely helps any of us. But one single person stepping out from the shadows to say "hey, I really appreciate you, thanks". That's what really helps artists.

So I just wanted to give a heartfelt thank you to those who have gone out of their way to do that. It's brave too. People are shy enough as it is to comment on NSFW art most of the time, let alone go out of your way to actually speak directly to the person responsible for it. Though my DM responses tend to just be quick things like "thank you!", know that it really helps me (and other artists like me).

I like to come by every now and then to check out what the NG community is up to, usually for a few days at a time. I’ll spend a lot of time browsing art, new movies from people of all skill levels, and read journal entries from random people.

Here are a list of thoughts I’ve had recently regarding Newgrounds compared to other sites.

No other site is better at recognizing artists than Newgrounds.

Since time immemorial, Newgrounds has placed artists front and centre. Each day, different artists are showcased on the front page, and awards are distributed regularly by the community. Not only that, Newgrounds is anti-AI, unlike other “art” sites. I don’t have to worry about coming across a nice piece of art and wondering if the person who made it is a human being or some chump that shit it out like he ordered a pizza.

There is a wealth of inspiration.

I can spend hours going through the art and movie portal where I’ll see things I like, then something else will catch my eye via more from this artist or favourites. I don’t really get this from other sites or their UI.

Not enough people use this site or have even heard of it. (+Monetization)

I’ve spoken to too many people who have either never heard of this site or thought it died 1-2 decades ago. I feel part of that might be due to monetization issues (particularly from animators). People are more encouraged to post to sites like YouTube where there’s ad revenue… even though that site routinely shafts animators. Perhaps adding some sort of financial support like a button where users can donate $x.xx to an artist and 1-3% goes to Newgrounds, and add incentives for doing so like collectible profile badges (akin to Twitch).

There’s too many SFM movies.

I like some SFM. There’s definitely a lot of good SFM material, but I’m not a fan of how many very hastily-put-together SFM sex videos there are. People will make a 2 second loop of one scene and upload it for thousands of views, then change the angle and upload another. I feel like maybe SFM should have its own portal, but I dunno. It’s exhausting to see.

A-rated art should get awards and features too.

I recently messaged Fulp about this and received a response. I won’t go into detail here about what plans he described in the event he changes his mind.

I definitely understand why A-rated art and other art is separated and also not showcased together. After all, A-rated content gets views out the wazoo and doesn’t need such encouragement; however, there are so many really talented adult creators that don’t get the recognition they deserve, or get drowned out by low-quality content like what I outlined above. I’d like to see a separate trophy list and featured list on a regular basis for adult creators that encourages people to not just post low-effort sex scenes.

Those are a few of my compiled thoughts I’ve had lately towards this site. I hope more people come back and experience NG and find inspiration as I have.

Hello! Thank you to all the new followers! I wasn't really expecting people to like that hellhound animation so much lol. It's pretty old and kind of niche.

For those wondering why there hasn't been any newer artwork, this year has been particularly rough for me. In July, however, I started a new project - an art book! I've been working on it almost every day since, and as of writing this journal entry it is about 12% done.

The art book will contain a very large portion of my art from around 2012 onward as well as never-before-seen stuff and details about characters and scenarios. It will also feature new stuff that I haven't got around to uploading or finishing yet.

Currently, my plans for the book are only to distribute it locally and see how the reception is. If it picks up and more people become interested, I may sell it online.

Also, I've added a section towards the end of the book for gift art from friends and followers. I've already received some entries, but I have room for more!

I'd like to say thank you to all of the new followers and people who have enjoyed my work so far. When I had started uploading my art here, I was expecting to barely get any views and it would just be another typical case of my work getting swept under the rug. That hasn't been the case.

In the first few days of uploading I've already received over 50 followers and thousands of views across my work. This is not likely to be something that would happen on another site. I was also scouted very quickly (by whom I do not know - is there a way to find that out?). All of these things were very unexpected. Thank you for the support and a big thank you to whoever thought my stuff was good enough to be scouted.

As I mentioned in my previous post, I've been in a bad mental state for years regarding my art. I haven't been able to produce anything. I've been very unhappy with anything I attempt to make. In the last few days, I have spent hours going through peoples' galleries and looking at the animation portal and I've been overwhelmed by a lot of the creativity I've seen. It's managed to motivate me to not only draw again, but I also finished two pieces that I had started from as far back as the start of 2020. You should see those uploaded soon at some point.

I appreciate everyone who enjoys what I do, whether it's because it turns you on, or you think it's creative or like how it's drawn, or you think "haha that's weird and silly". Either way, I hope it makes you feel good.

Here's a bit of a really old piece as thanks that I don't know if I'll ever finish or redo, but I don't really have another place to put it.

I have been in an artistic rut for a couple of years now. Anything I make has gone unfinished, or takes an exceptionally long time to do. Because of this, along with the current climate of social media and everything else falling apart in this world, I’ve become much more apathetic and cynical.

For the last few days I’ve decided to take a break from most other social media and just do a mix of browsing creators on here at all skill levels, as well as posting some of my stuff. There are so many talented people on here, and new creators with potential.

It reminded me when I first started using Newgrounds, back when the site was pretty new. I think I was around 12. There were so many goofy and edgy things back then. I used to think things like “I wish I could draw, and maybe even animate”. I used to think that if I had the ability to draw, I’d make stuff all the time. Yet here I am now, barely doing anything for months on end.

It’s not just depression or lack of motivation. This year I’ve been diagnosed with two very crippling diseases. I’ve run into a lot of physical difficulty with making things on top of everything else. But spending the hours I have the last few days browsing all the interesting things people make (instead of waiting for Twitter to chuck something nice at me while I wade through a mire of stupidity and doom) has helped bring back some of that lost motivation. I am hopeful it will lead to me being able to make things again.

I hope other artists who are feeling the same way with social media and other sites try out Newgrounds and see if it helps spark something in them again too.

Hello. I have a few questions for people in the NG community.

I've mostly been a lurker on this site for the last couple decades and only now started uploading things, so I'm unfamiliar with the systems.

Q. Is there a way to see when people "Fave" your art or reply to you besides manually checking each submission?

Usually on other sites you receive some sort of notification, and there's also a summary page that shows all of your submissions and all of the views/likes/votes they have.

Q. Art doesn't seem to be showing up anywhere besides my page when I post it. I assume this is because of the approval process?

I know the movie and audio portals have a judgment feature for new submissions to remove junk, but I wasn't aware of the art portal having a similar system. I suppose that that's the case here too.

If anyone could fill me in on any of that, I would be thankful. :)
